  1. Bob Says:

In 1968-69, I was onboard USS New Jersey off South Vietnam and we conducted an unrep with Isbell. The AJ Ops boss stood on the DASH deck dressed as Superman. When the ship broke off, she took of like a veritable rocket (relatively, of course). I was impressed as she lifted from the sea and took off.

I know it was the ops boss because he was still there when I was transferred to Isbell in Oct ’69.

  2. Bill Strawbridge Says:

I was on board the Isbell then. I recall that unrep. Both captains decided to have a 5 mile drag race. Our captain had up a full head of steam before we broke away. We won!. We could see the New Jersey catching up before the race ended.

  3. Tom Schmitt Says:

Superman (AKA the Supply Officer who served in AJI from May 1967 to March 1969) appeared from time to time atop the ASROC launcher when departing from Gulf of Tonkin UNREPS during her WESTPAC deployment from July 1968 to February 1969. HIs appearance was chronicled on the front page of “Stars and Stripes,” whose tireless investigative reporters revealed his true identity. Lois Lane was devastated to learn it was not Clark Kent.
